Jeff
Smokevitch
As a native of Detroit, Michigan (i.e., Birmingham, MI), Jeffrey Smokevitch often says Detroit style pizza is in his blood. Detroit style is not only in his blood, but it has become the signature pie of the two restaurants he co-owns: Brown Dog Pizza (Telluride, CO) and Blue Pan (Denver, CO). Jeff takes pride in all his pizzas, but he has worked to enhance and add his take on Detroit style pizzas.
Shortly after co-founding Brown Dog Pizza, Jeff attended and graduated from the International School of Pizza (San Francisco). Under the tutelage of Tony Gemignani, Jeff honed his pizza making skills, particularly for Detroit style pizza.
In 2010, Jeff was asked to join the World Pizza Champions. In 2013 he won his first World Championship in Las Vegas at the International Pizza Competition. Jeff continues to successfully compete in national and international individual as well as team competitions (e.g., Parma Italy, Paris, France and Las Vegas, NV). He is also a sought-after teacher and consultant. Additionally, Jeff and his restaurants have been featured on local and national shows including on the Food Network’s, Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.
Prior to his career as pizzaiolo, Jeff graduated from the University of Michigan with a BA in economics. (And to his parents' disappointment became a ski bum after graduation.) While at Michigan, he was a member of the varsity football team that won two Big Ten Conference titles and the 1997 National Championship. Jeff splits his time between Telluride and Denver.
